Ice hockey ranked fifth place in the list of the 15 most popular sports in America. This sport ranks behind pro football in terms of popularity among Americans.

Ice hockey has climbed the ranking in recent decades. In 1985, pro football ranked first with 24%, followed by baseball with 23%, school football and school basketball with 10% each. At this time, ice hockey became the eleventh place with 2%, behind auto racing, golf, tennis, bowling, and pony racing.
